Printing begins on the long awaited book
of Dandie cartoons. The dummy mock-up is
being sent to the Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Club of America’s National Specialty the
weekend of August 9 - 12 in the state of
Washington. Orders can be made there for
copies. The dummy is also shortly to be
launched in Britain, and much of Europe -and
we hope Dandie lovers everywhere will order
this charming and humerous book which will
hopefully be finished in hardback with gold
lettering.
The generous forthcoming of support from
individuals and some businesses to help
launch this publication has made possible
the dream of Celia, Margreth, Ineke and now
Bronwell; a book of original Dandie humor
and cartoons for all Dandie lovers to keep
and enjoy for years. Yet the book has
another purpose, that of raising money for scientific
research into the gene that carries the
glaucoma problem. At present, the only known
site of such research is the Veterinary
School of the University of Missouri under
the direction of Dr. Gary Johnson. In time
perhaps there will be others.
The Canine Health Foundation, associated
with the American Kennel Club, has agreed to
match the funds raised by such efforts as
this. Groups raising a certain level of
monies are listed as their official sponsors
and receive public recognition as such. They
work closely with the research presently
going on at the University of Missouri.
The purpose of this research, as stated
by Dr. Johnson, is that the information and
knowledge he and his team discover will be
shared with the world community. He has no
hidden purpose of making personal profit.
When the gene is found, a breeder can
perform the simple process of swabbing the
inside cheek of a dog and any capable lab
can easily check the DNA for the genetic
marker for the glaucoma or the lack of it
and a breeder can breed selectively. This is
the intended objective of the monies
collected from sponsors, book sales and any
other items Dandie lovers might care to
donate for sale.
The international community of concerned
and dedicated Dandie supporters is truly a
remarkable and inspiring collection of
people. The founders of this Dandie Dinmont
Trust Fund are indeed gratified to see and
treasure this tide of dedication.
