We have some good news for
you all, Dandies have now been added to the DNA research project
for the two year study of Glaucoma and lens luxation at the Uni’
of Missouri. Initially, Dandies were mentioned but not included
in the original proposal. We at the Trust have had a lot of
contact with the University - who - initially did not have
enough Dandie blood samples, interest, or a funding body - to
enable them to include Dandies in their research. We mailed many
of our American ‘cuzzins’ and encouraged them to send blood
samples to the Uni’ - but then - it was up to us to raise
funds - which fortunately the Canine Health Foundation match!
We have worked hard - and
we are progressing - thanks to all of you who have had faith in
us. The staff at the University could now say to the board at
the Canine Health Foundation - that we at the Trust - would
support Dandie research with our funds - thus Dandies have been
added. An extra bonus is that recently the DDTC of America were
approached and I believe they are currently asking their members
for approval to provide further funding - so if this should
happen - we are well on the way! We all hope this research is
fruitful and the gene responsible for Glaucoma in some of our
Dandies is identified.
We are intensifying our
fund raising effort even further - by making and selling Dandie
cards, sculptures, towels, and any other memorabilia that is
donated to us - and at the moment as well as those items - we
have some Gordon’s Book of the Dandie for sale. We have had
people give us donations, or helped us in acquiring these, we
have others who encourage sponsorship - we thank them all. Now,
we continue with our efforts - and would continue to encourage
other Dandie organisations to help in this worthwhile cause.
Thanks again from us all -
Celia, Margreth, Ineke, Bronwell.
